Under-eye Rejuvenation

Under eye concerns

The eye area is one of the first areas of the face to show signs of aging. This is due to the skin around the eyes being thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the face, as well as the constant movement of the muscles around the eyes when we smile, squint, and make other facial expressions.

The aging process can affect the eye area in several ways:

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles: As we age, the skin in the eye area loses collagen and elasticity, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
  2. Puffiness: The skin around the eyes can become puffy or swollen due to fluid buildup, which can be exacerbated by factors such as lack of sleep, allergies, or hormonal changes.
  3. Dark circles: Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, lack of sleep, and age-related thinning of the skin.
  4. Crow’s feet: Crow’s feet are the lines that appear at the outer corners of the eyes, and are often caused by repeated facial expressions such as squinting or smiling.
  5. Hollowing: As we age, the fat under the skin in the eye area can diminish, leading to a hollowed-out or sunken appearance. This hollowness can make you appear tired even when you are well-rested.

As we age, the changes in our bone structure combined with the displacement of fat tissue under the eyes create a groove between the lower lid and cheek area called the tear trough. Additionally, the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin makes it thinner and more transparent. These changes make the eyes appear sunken and cast shadows underneath the lid contributing to dark circles. Some people are genetically predisposed to hollowness under the eyes and this manifests at an early age. As well as hollowness you may also develop eye bags with advancing age. These are caused by pockets of fat separating and bulging out due to excess skin laxity. Puffiness under the eyes is due to water retention.

It is important to distinguish between dark circles caused by pigmentation and volume loss. Under-eye fillers are a minimally invasive way to improve the hollowness under the eyes for a soft, natural effect. Although this does not directly improve pigmentation, reducing the shadows can help to brighten the under-eye area.
