Dermal fillers are gels of varying viscosity injected under the skin to volumise and create lift. Nowadays, most dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid-based. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally produced substance in your skin providing hydration and bounce. Dermal fillers are manufactured differently to give them different properties. Consequently,  different fillers are indicated for different areas of your face.

Once injected, hyaluronic acid produces a number of effects. Firstly, by occupying space, it creates a lift. Secondly, by attracting and holding onto water, it hydrates and plumps your skin. Thirdly, it encourages collagen and elastin production within the skin maintaining the results. However, hyaluronic acid does not last in your skin forever. Depending on the area it is injected, your body breaks it down over time. Nonetheless,  the effect it has on collagen stimulation remains.

Why do some people look odd with dermal fillers?

When you hear the words dermal filler, images of overfilled puffy cheeks or pouty lips may come into your mind. This can happen if too much filler is used or the wrong filler is used in the wrong area of the face. For example, lips require a softer product versus the jawline which requires a firm product. The correct filler will replicate your own skin and move with your facial expression. Hence, in the right hands, having a filler treatment gives you the subtlest of results.

What are the advantages of dermal filler?

There are many advantages to dermal filler treatments. Firstly, as a non-surgical facial rejuvenation, it is less invasive with minimal downtime. Secondly, you can have a staggered approach targeting the most problematic area(s) first. Once the desired effect is achieved, you can maintain this with repeated treatments. Most importantly, as dermal fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme, it can be reversed should a rare complication arise.

How does the practitioner know which filler is best for me?

As a doctor, I would never pick up a syringe to inject without gaining enough knowledge and understanding of the product or the area being treated. Needless to say, I would encourage you to consult a medical practitioner who is insured and accountable for all your treatments.

The consultation is key to discussing your concerns and treatment planning. Firstly, it is fundamental to understand the ageing process of the face. This ensures the most suitable product is used for the desired effect. Occasionally a combination treatment is required with fillers, anti-wrinkle injections and skin rejuvenation treatments. As we all age differently, a bespoke approach will be designed for you.

During your treatment, a firm dermal filler will be placed deeply to support your bone structure. Here, while remaining immobile, it helps to lift areas that have become flat or started to sag. Some deep lines can be directly filled with softer dermal fillers to restore and smooth out facial contours. Your lips can be injected with fillers to hydrate and restore a more youthful appearance.

There are specific hyaluronic acid products that target skin laxity. Profhilo is an injectable moisturiser that disperses within the skin layer stimulating collagen and elastin production.  Skin boosters contain hyaluronic acid and other active ingredients to tighten and biorevitailise the skin. Botox is excellent for smoothing out the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet among other uses. I often use prescription skincare in combination with clinic treatments such as skin peels and micro-needling to help you look and feel amazing.
